As the final buses departed, Ron Haggart and the other men on the citizens’ committee were anxious to put the Kingston ordeal behind them and get back to their lives. The past four days had left everyone emotionally and physically drained. Desmond Morton, still recovering from his heart attack, said he was thinking of checking himself into a hospital to recover. “I’m not tired,” he told a Toronto Daily Star reporter before he left the prison. “I’m finished.”

Four of the men from the committee drove back to Toronto, while an exhausted Haggart returned to his hotel room to sit down at his typewriter. He was on a deadline. His editor at the Toronto Telegram was holding tomorrow’s front page for his story.

Haggart and the others were relieved at how the riot had ended. They had managed to resolve the prison uprising without the army retaking the prison by force, an outcome that would have resulted in multiple casualties. And they had kept their word to Barrie MacKenzie. The inmates had not been mistreated and they were safely on their way to other institutions.

But Haggart and the others had no idea what was awaiting the new arrivals at Millhaven. For the rest of his life, Haggart would regret not getting on one of those buses to accompany the prisoners.
